About

I am a small ‘private press’ that produces handmade works on paper using the imprint 'Veloset Press'. I am inspired by modernist architecture, folk art and the Japanese aesthetic of Shibui. Originally I studied exhibition design, worked in theatre for many years and learnt printmaking whilst working as an exhibition technician at Edinburgh Printmakers (est. 1967). I have since set up a dedicated print space at Indigo Studios (Edinburgh) where I develop my own work and encourage others.

I am interested in the beauty of everyday utilitarian objects and the nuances and patination of imperfection and natural sporadic processes. Technical knowledge and a disciplined work ethic underpin the production of composite works (koraju) that are made by off-setting oil based inks using soft Japanese hand rollers, relief printing using a vintage Farley press and hand cut paper stencils (kappazuri).

Works are largely abstracted representations of skies, landscapes and structures. Processes are intuitive and spontaneous. Composite prints are simultaneously: refined and organic, modular and variable, unique and relatable. Recent prints are inspired by the seascapes of Western Scotland as viewed from ‘Provident’.

Veloset Press has exhibited work across the UK and has been commissioned to produce print editions in the publishing and retail sectors.

I am a member of Visual Arts Scotland (VAS), the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA) and Scottish Artist Union.
